I use this mat when baking anything on a tray in the oven that requires parchment paper or any kind of nonstick spray. Some people have said this is the best silicone baking sheet they have ever used. I will say that baking with a silicone sheet has made cooking on the oven very easy to uses and convenient. A silpat is a non-stick baking mat that is a replacement for parchment paper. It doesn’t require any greasing so it saves time, money and reduces waste. They are made out of fiberglass and high grade food silicone.
Whenever I bake cookies or some kind of food in the oven where I would normally grease a pan or use parchment paper, I'm baking with a Silpat. If you're wondering how to clean a Silpat, it's so easy. Just wipe it with a damp cloth and rinse with water. So now that you just learned how to clean a silicone baking sheet, how long will it last?
Depending on how well you care for your silpat, it states that it can be used for 2 - 3,000 times. I am nowhere near that number, but it’s worked out well for me so far. You do need to be careful how you store this. You can store is flat or rolled, but never bent.
A few things you need to know before using a Silpat or silicone baking mat. If you’re using an insulated cookie sheet, the cookies may not cook properly. Try using a non-insulated perforated cookie sheet or pan with a Silpat on top for the best results. Also because this is non-stick, the cookie dough slides easily while baking. This tends to produce flatter and rounder cookie, so be sure you keep that in mind.
Don’t use knives to clean or cut on the Silpat and don’t use it on direct heat, on the bottom of an oven, grill or broiler. These are all the things you need to know about how to use silicone baking mats or Silpat.
